Syllabus for Biostats Course VHM 802 at AVC - Winter Semester
2021
The syllabus for the exam of VHM 802 consists of:
- A First Course in Design and Analysis of Experiments, by Gary Oehlert (GO):
Chapters 1, 3-5, 8-10 (only 10.1-2), and 13-14,
- Veterinary Epidemiologic Research, 2nd ed., by Dohoo, Martin and Stryhn (VER):
Chapters 14-16 and 20-22,
- Multivariate Statistical Methods: A Primer, 3rd/4th ed., by Manly (and Alberto; MA):
Chapters 1-9,11-12,
except for the listed exceptions and additions below:
- GO sections/topics listed explicitly as omissions in Sessions 6-7,
- VER Sections 15.4.5, 16.13-15, 20.5.3-5, 21.3-4, 21.5.6-9, 22.3, 22.4.3-5, 22.5-6,
- MA Sections 5.5-6, 8.7-9, 12.5-6,
- material about contrasts in GO beyond basic comparison of
treatment groups for one and two factors,
- the manual calculations of multivariate statistics detailed in MA,
including the calculation of robust tests for equal variances in Chapter
4.
Additional material presented at the lectures is generally not directly part of
the syllabus, but the corresponding sections of the books are (unless
listed above). A few exceptions to this rule are the following methods, which are not described in
any of the textbook references (but are still included in the syllabus):
- the material in Session 7 on cross-over designs,
- the material in Session 9 on K-means clustering,
- the material in Session 10 on polychoric (etc) correlations and
their use for PCA and FA.
Furthermore included in the syllabus is the programming
of the models/analyses in Minitab or Stata (or R) and the interpretation of the
corresponding output.
Finally, students not taking the regression part of VHM 802 (because
they already have taken or simultaneously take VHM 812) will not be examined
in the regression portions of the syllabus (VER: Chapters 14-16).
